As reported by Deadline, filmmaker Stacy Title – who was nominated for an Oscar for directing the 1993 short On the sea front-is dead. Title was diagnosed with ALS three years ago, shortly after being involved in a car crash that doctors said somehow triggered the neurodegenerative disease. The title was 56.
Title’s first breakthrough in the film industry was its Oscar nominated short On the sea front, which starred Jason Alexander, Ed Asner and Title husband Jonathan Penner – a Survivor candidate and actor who has collaborated with Title on a number of his films. She also directed the black comedy The last supper in 1995 (a film about liberal college students plotting to assassinate far-right extremists with a cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Courtney B. Vance, Bill Paxton and Ron Perlman) and 1999’s Let the devil wear black, a modern account of Hamlet. Title and Penner have also developed an attempt Long Ranger reboot for The WB starring Chad Michael Murray which was not picked up as a full series.
The title also led the 2006 horror anthology Snoop Dogg’s Horror Hood and 2017 The Bye Bye Man—A film that significantly outperformed at the box office, despite the reception largely negative reviews. That same year, Title made its first television episode (on Hulu’s Weird), but her accident happened soon after and the disease progressed very quickly. Within months, she could no longer speak or swallow, but Deadline says she remained determined to make one last movie. This project, entitled Time bomb and with Jason Alexander, Cary Elwes and Bob Odenkirk, didn’t end up happening, but Deadline notes that Title still spends his final years directing public service announcements about ALS and working as a disability advocate in Hollywood.
