Paramount + has given the formal green light to Fat: The rise of the pink ladies, a prequel series to the classic 1978 film, which originates from Paramount Television Studios.

The 10-episode pickup, which had been in the works for weeks, marks the first official order for scripted series since PTVS president Nicole Clemens added a senior role to the streamer as president, Paramount + Original Scripted Series.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is fixed four years before the original Fat. Before rock’n’roll reigns, before the T-Birds are the coolest in school, four tired outcast girls dare to have fun in their own way, unleashing a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.

While the description could be interpreted to refer to the film’s four Pink Ladies, Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty, and Jan, the spinoff series will actually feature new characters.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (fka Fat: Rydell High), landed at Paramount + for development last fall after its turnaround by HBO Max where the prequel was originally rolled out with a direct serial order.

The prequel is written and produced by creator Annabel Oakes (Atypical), which will also serve as a showrunner. Marty Bowen will be executive producer via Temple Hill. Erik Feig will be executive producer via Picturestart.

The film Fat, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time before Disney’s reboot of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. Its soundtrack has sold over 8 million copies in the United States alone. The franchise made a successful return to television with the 2016 live-action staging on Fox, with Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens, who won five Emmy Awards.

Paramount + is betting heavily on spinoff TV series from some of the most iconic films in the Paramount library available on the platform. Also in the works are Flash dance, Love story and Italian work, as well as more Star Trek ramifications, among others.
