Rise of Vitek Vanacek: Caps beat Sabers 2-1

With a narrow victory Friday night, the Capitals emerged victorious in the opening series of the consecutive season in Buffalo. But it wasn’t quite the towering performance that got the Caps rolling on Thursday night.

The Caps took three penalties in the first half, but skillfully killed them to escape a tie. The second half was just as blah, but Jakub Vrana scored a nice rushed goal to give the Caps the lead.

The Sabers scored in their first shift of the third period, with one of their many Rasmii lose a tornado from the blue line. Tom Wilson responded with a twist to the top shelf of the faceoff point to restore Washington’s lead.

The caps win!

Two at the bottom.

  • Czech goalkeeper Vitek Vanacek made his debut in the NHL. After two busy periods (including 12 saves in the second), he allowed his first NHL goal – a Tom Wilson deflection up front. Overall a very good first appearance.
  • Meanwhile, no one seemed to like this really great video that I toiled for untold minutes creating?
  • Last week, notorious villain Kevin Klein posted an article to Japers Rink about how the Caps’ penalty woes will soon reverse. The Caps committed five unanswered penalties, three in the first half alone.
  • Great PKs though.
  • Jakub vrana has two goals in two games, and both have been crackers. I predicted a great season for the snek, and once again I am right in my analysis.
  • Meanwhile, Alex ovechkin was calm again. His line didn’t dominate possession as much as Thursday and Ovechkin had few looks.
  • Maybe he’ll have a better chance now that he’s apparently been reunited Tom wilson, assistant to the goal of Vrana, scorer of the winner, and …
  • Taylor hall, who again I have to remember is a Buffalo Saber now, took a puck to the face. He came back in the third period with a series of nasty stitches on his lip.

So what is good? It’s too early for me to say that except for this bad game. The Caps had no control since Thursday night, they asked too much of their rookie goalkeeper and they committed a ton of penalties. But they have another 🌮, and that’s enough for now.

But I’m expecting Ovi photos from the Ovi spot this weekend.

Then, the Caps head to Pittsburgh for a lunch with the Penguins.
