RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) – Starting Tuesday, residents of Riverside County aged 16 and over will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the four clinics run by the county.

Riverside County health officials say the change will open vaccine eligibility to hundreds of thousands more residents. People aged 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

“The expansion of eligibility will allow the last major group of adult residents of Riverside County to get vaccinated and bring us closer to herd immunity,” said Kim Saruwatari, director of the health system at Riverside University – Public health, in a press release. “Bringing the vaccine to a younger population, where we have seen an increase in cases, is a big step forward.”

Riverside County could move to the least restrictive orange level as early as this week. The county has been in the red level since March 16 and, for the previous five months, in the most restrictive purple level.
