Call this one The sound of the name of Riz Ahmed’s wife. When the Sound of metal star lets slip that he recently married Louis Theroux Grounded podcast, he wouldn’t share his wife’s name, but he changed his mind when speaking to Jimmy Fallon on January 13 Tonight’s show. The lucky lady? Fatima Farheen Mirza, “an amazing novelist” whose acclaimed debut in 2018, A place for us, was a New York Times One Book bestseller and finalist, One New York 2019. Ahmed met Mirza at a New York coffee shop while working on his Sound of metal role. “We were both like hustling over the same laptop connection point,” he said. “It’s like a very modern way to meet.”
One thing led to another, and the two were finally married in a “super intimate” ceremony in the courtyard. Ahmed told Fallon he didn’t want it to be a “secret” wedding, as it is described. “I never know how much sharing is excessive,” he explained. “Like, I’m into matcha lattes, but it never came. I’m not a secret matcha latte drinker. Not anymore, at least! The best part of her pandemic little marriage, though? “You didn’t have 500 aunts around you pinching your cheeks,” Ahmed said. “No disrespect for aunts, but Asian weddings are great, and you always got these people out of the woodwork, who I think are probably impostors.” They just smell of kebabs on the street and just walk around, like, ‘Yeah, I knew you when you were a kid!’
