Robbery in mall shot for shot

MILPITAS – A loud noise during an attempted armed robbery at a Great Mall Mall in the Bay Area has been confused with a shooting risk, triggering an active police response on Sunday.

Around 7:30 pm, Milpitas police officers started responding to the mall and were posted to the department's Twitter account around 8:00 pm. ask residents and visitors to avoid the area.

At 8:30 pm, police said:[i]Confidential reports from social media and other sources that gunshots were fired at GMBA are not confirmed at this time. As a precaution, people inside GMBA were invited to stay on site while soldiers searched the mall.

A few minutes later, the police then began working to escort the workers to the mall parking lot and added that they had found no evidence of gunfire.

No suspects in the attempted robbery were in custody Sunday night, but investigators are expected to interview employees at at least one store and examine the surveillance footage of the mall.

Shortly before 11 pm, police announced that the mall had been cleared and employees could return, and also thanked Milpitas firefighters, San Jose police and sheriff's deputies from Santa Clara County, officers of the Golden Gate Division of the California Highway Patrol and paramedics.
