Former New York real estate mogul Robert Durst said during his Los Angeles murder trial on Wednesday that he used cocaine, methamphetamine and “a lot of marijuana” before the suspicious disappearance of his wife decades ago.
When asked about his relationship with Kathie Durst, the now ill 78-year-old admitted to living a drug-fueled lifestyle in 1970s New York – when the couple lived with their friend, Susan Berman, that he is now accused of killing, according to FOX News.
“I’ve tried it a few times,” Durst said of the cocaine. “Fortunately, I can’t snort anything because I have a bad hay fever. So every time I tried cocaine my nose was stuffed up for three or four days.
At the stand, he also told defense attorneys that Kathie Durst was a heavy cocaine user and that he took methamphetamine and smoked “a lot of marijuana”.
“There were a lot of drugs around,” he said of the period. “Theoretically, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana were illegal, but the only people who appeared to be getting arrested were black people in Harlem. “
Prosecutors say Durst shot Berman in the style of an execution in the back of the head in December 2000 to prevent him from incriminating him in the disappearance of his first wife, Kathie Durst, who was 29 when ‘she disappeared in 1982.
On Wednesday, Durst claimed that on the whole, the couple had a ‘happy’ marriage even though he insisted she had an unwanted abortion.
“I was very, very opposed to having children,” he said. “I felt it was such a responsibility. I didn’t want to be a dad. My childhood had been a disaster. I didn’t want the same to happen to my child.
During the trial, prosecutors were allowed to present evidence that Durst murdered his first wife and neighbor Morris Black in Texas in 2001 with Berman.
Durst was arrested in 2015 after the HBO documentary series “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” featured a scene where he was caught on a hot mic, saying, “What the hell is j Killed them all, of course.
Durst, who now has bladder cancer, later said he was also “speeding up” on methamphetamine while filming the show.
His lawyers claimed he found Berman’s body, panicked and fled to Texas, before sending the cops a letter saying “BODY” with his friend’s address.
