Pairing Pattinson's superhero and the Phoenix villain could be a box-office gold mine for Warner Bros.
Robert Pattinson's Variety cover includes the actor's early reflections on becoming the last actor to face Bruce Wayne / Batman, but this is a moment that departs from the published interview that is making a splash with comic fans (via ScreenRant). The head of the Variety office in New York, Ramin Setoodeh, writes: "At one point in our conversation, [Pattinson] has a banal comment on Joaquin Phoenix, who plays in Joker (a film he has not seen yet), before asking that this film be removed. "Oh shit," he says, adding that he's not used to thinking of spoilers. "
Pattinson continues to tell Setoodeh, "I should not say that. I'm so used to pretty house art movies, where you can watch the movie three times without always knowing what it's all about. "
Pattinson's retraction means nothing says what the actor said about Joaquin Phoenix, but that does not stop fans from thinking that a plan might be under way for Pattinson's Batman to cross with the Joker's Phoenix. Phoenix embodies the villainous Batman in Warner Bros.'s "Joker" fall marquee, presented for the first time in competition at the Venice Film Festival, to the applause of Phoenix. Variety notes that Pattinson's spoiler concerned a comment on Phoenix in particular, and not the movie "Joker" in general, which led some fans to believe that Pattinson knew there was an ambitious plan involving Phoenix and his own future film cartoon.
"Joker" director Todd Phillips has already expressed his interest in making another film with Joaquin Phoenix as the main character, more or less confirming that the new film ends with the Phoenix villain living in Gotham City. "I would do anything with Joaquin Phoenix, no matter what day of the week," Phillips said. "There is nobody like him. If he was willing to do it, and if people came to this film, and Warners came to tell us, "You know what? If you could think of something … "Well, I have the feeling that he and I could think of something very cool.
Phillips' "Joker" would seem to lay the groundwork for Bruce Wayne's presentation, considering that Brett Cullen plays Thomas Wayne in a supporting role. If Thomas Wayne exists in the world of "Joker", the young Bruce Wayne has a good chance to exist or will exist in the future.
Another sign that fans point out is that Pattinson's "Joker" and "The Batman" do not exist in the vast DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which includes movies like "Wonder Woman" and "Aquaman". Jared Leto debuted as DCEU Joker in "Suicide Squad". Warner Bros. confirmed that "Joker" existed outside the DCEU, while Deadline announced that "The Batman" would be centered on a young Bruce Wayne (hence the cast of Pattinson) and had no connection with the DCEU Batman who Ben Affleck played in "Batman v Superman" and "Justice League". The fact that both films exist outside the CUS opens the door to Pattinson and Phoenix's passage at some point, although Warner Bros. has not confirmed anything about it.
"Joker" will be available in theaters on October 4th, after additional festival screenings at TIFF and NYFF. "The Batman" by Pattinson, directed by Matt Reeves, will be released June 25, 2021.
