The Jets have agreed in principle to Robert Saleh, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator for the past four seasons, to become their head coach.
Saleh will become the 20th head coach of the Jets in franchise history and their 18th coach named to take the reins of Green & White ahead of the start of a new season.
Under Saleh’s leadership in 2020, San Francisco had a top 10 defense in total yards (fifth), rushing yards (seventh) and passing yards (fourth). In 19, San Fran was second in the league’s overall standings in total defense – with 281.8 yards / game allowed by the team since 1997 – and first in passing defense – with 169.2 passing yards. / game allowed being the best in the NFL since the Rex Ryan and Jets defense allowed 153.7 yards per pass / game in 2009. After coaching this 49ers unit, Saleh received the coordinator of the year award by The Sporting News.
Similar rankings have occurred in Saleh’s previous professional stops in the previous 16 seasons. In Jacksonville from 2014-2016, he was the Jaguars linebacker coach, and the team improved to sixth overall and fifth against the pass in their final season with the Jags. From 2011 to 2013, he coached Seattle’s defensive quality control focusing on LBs and the Seahawks’ defense rose to No. 1 overall in the league, against the pass and in scoring in his last year in the Far North-West in 2013.
Saleh held three different titles in six seasons with Houston from 2005 to 2010, and the Texans entered the league’s top half in many defensive categories in 2009, his first of two seasons as an assistant linebacker coach.
A native of Michigander, Saleh grew up in Dearborn and started TE for four seasons at Northern Michigan University. Prior to entering the professional coaching ranks, Saleh extended his roots in Michigan with two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State and one at Central Michigan before a brief stoppage at the University of Georgia in 2005 before moving to get to Houston.
