Mets Second Baseman Robinson Cano According to numerous reports, the team has called tight left quarter to leave Wednesday's game. After failing to end the third inning, Cano appeared pained after racing to first base, and Adeiny Hechavarria took the place of Cano at second base to start the top of the fourth. According to Tim Britton of The Athletic (Twitter link), field player Luis Guillorme was removed from the Triple-A Syracuse match tonight, so the Mets could already schedule a relay from the injured list for Cano.
Losing Cano would be the last of a long series of notable injuries to the Mets this season. The position player is particularly shorthanded for the moment. Michael Conforto (concussion), Brandon Nimmo (stiff neck), and Jed Lowrie (hamstrings) currently on the list of injured, and Jeff McNeil was also off the list tonight with what appears to be a fairly minor problem for the hamstrings.
McNeil's status is particularly important if the Mets consider an absence of IL for Cano, given that McNeil would seem to be the most obvious candidate to move to second base. Neither Hechavarria nor Guillorme offer much seating in the regular service of the second goal, and although the mix for the outfields is also not perfectly solid with Conforto and Nimmo put out, the Mets have at least some numbers in the form of infors J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith, plus veterans Rajai Davis and Carlos Gomez.
A move to IL would be another disappointing turn in what has been until now an approximate return to New York for Cano. The 36-year-old hit only 0.241 / 0.287 / 0.371 in his first appearances at plate 181 as Met, with a wRC + 82 that would mark the worst of his career.
