Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2021: Jay-Z and Foo Fighters nominated

There might be a fat pimp walking down the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In his first year of eligibility, Brooklyn’s Jay-Z was among the nominees for the 2021 rock hall promotion, which were announced Wednesday morning.

If inducted, Hova would only become the third solo rapper to hook his mic to the RRHOF, after Tupac Shakur (2017) and Notorious BIG (2020) were posthumously dedicated.

Fresh off their 10th studio album, “Medicine at Midnight,” earlier this month, Foo Fighters also won a nomination the first time they were eligible – 25 years after an artist’s debut album. If, as expected, the Foos are among the inductees announced in May, it will be the second seat at the time table for singer Dave Grohl, who is already in the exclusive music club with Nirvana.

Legendary diva Dionne Warwick – a first-time nominee who has been eligible since 1988. No doubt her numerous Twitter followers will make a little prayer for Aunt Dionne – who turned 80 in December – to be inducted just a year after her late cousin Whitney Houston.

Other newcomers to the ballot include the Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, and Nigerian tall Fela Kuti. Meanwhile, Carole King – already in the rock hall since 1990 as a songwriter – received her first nod as a performer.

King is part of a strong show for female artists, who represent seven of the 16 nominees this year. Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush and Tina Turner, who – 30 years after being elected half of Ike and Tina Turner in 1991 – could draw a Stevie Nicks as the second female performer to be inducted twice.

But before Turner steps in for the second time, it would be great to see another funk-soul queen – Chaka Khan – finally take her rightful place at the RRHOF. This is the sixth appointment of the “I’m Every Woman” singer – her third as a solo artist in addition to three with Rufus with Chaka Khan.

Devo, LL Cool J, the New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, and Todd Rundgren complete a diverse group of actors who hope to be honored at the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this fall. And let’s hope COVID doesn’t spoil the party this year.
