Rocket League’s next-gen features are much better on Xbox than on PS5

Double the frames

As consoles evolve in the future, so does the beloved soccer game but with cars that are sort of already five years old. Although Rocket league is old enough to be a kindergarten, it’s still quite a relevant game. In fact, it’s more relevant than ever now that Epic has made it free-to-play. He actually surpassed CS: GOrecord concurrent players in September, peaking at around 1.3 million people online at a time.

Psyonix revealed their next-gen plans for Rocket league. One platform represents a step forward, the other not.

Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X gamers will have the option to play Rocket league at 120 fps, which is a significant improvement over the 60 fps mode on Xbox One X and the 30 fps limit on the Xbox One S. Here is the breakdown of next-gen improvements:

Xbox Series X:

  • Quality mode: 4K resolution at 60 fps with HDR
  • Performance mode: 1512p resolution (70% of 4K) at 120 fps with HDR

Xbox Series S:

  • Quality mode: 1080p resolution at 60fps
  • Performance Mode: 756p resolution (70% of 1080p) at 120 fps with HDR

On PlayStation, the PS5 version is the same as the PS4 Pro version. It will run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. As GamesBeat points out, this is because of the limitations of Sony’s backward compatibility program. Get Rocket league to support 120 fps, Psyonix would need to develop a native version for the PS5.

This means that the Xbox is, without a doubt, the best console for anyone starting to get competitive. Rocket league. High frame rates are more important than graphics fidelity. This is not the ultimate solution, however. I always loved this story about former pro Matt who used to turn his monitor down to 60 fps when playing in LAN tournaments. Even though these were big, fancy events with high-end sponsors providing monitors up to 240 fps, Matt played on a 60Hz monitor at home. He didn’t want to risk playing worse because it wouldn’t look like he was used to.

It should also be noted that these upgrades will not be implemented immediately. They arrive later in 2020 as part of a new “Video Quality” setting. At launch, both Xbox consoles will support 4K and 60fps. But when it goes down to 120 fps, be careful. This is probably the boost you need to finally hit Grand Champ. Probably.
