Rockets agreed to pay Daryl Morey and Tad Brown even after departures

Daryl Morey left the Rockets for the 76ers. Now, Tad Brown follows Morey from Houston to Philadelphia (replacing Scott O’Neil as CEO).

Why are these executives running away from the Rockets?

Jonathan Feigen from the Houston Chronicle:

The Rockets’ deal with Morey, Brown and others who were part of the sale when the team was sold to Tilman Fertitta in 2017 gave guaranteed five-year contract extensions in which they will be paid by the Rockets, even after taking positions with other organizations, someone with knowledge of the agreements says.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon:

It was kind of Leslie Alexander, but it sounds like a mistake on Tilman Fertitta’s part to agree to these terms. These clauses prompted Morey and Brown to leave Houston. They can now double their pay, but would each have earned only one income if they stayed with the Rockets. Fertitta could have given Morey and Brown the big money Alexander wanted, just with a more logical structure.

As the Rockets headed south around James Harden’s trade demand, it was even easier for Morey and Brown to move on. Heck, if Harden knew the terms of Morey’s contract and suspected that Morey was leaving, it might even have influenced Harden’s decision.

Houston is apparently happy with its new general manager, Rafael Stone. But Morey is among the best in the business, and the Rockets had him under contract.

Now they pay him while he works elsewhere.

It’s not a great setup.
