The number of measles cases in Rockland reached 280 during the recent outbreak, according to the Rockland County Health Department.

County officials do not provide the number of active cases, but only the total number of cases that have occurred since the beginning of the measles epidemic last fall.

According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control, there have been 1,109 confirmed cases of measles in the United States so far this year. Cases have been detected in 28 states. Brooklyn and Rockland had the highest number, mainly in the Orthodox Jewish community. The Rockland epidemic began near high Jewish holidays with visitors from Israel, where measles is a permanent health problem.

County and state health departments have run free MMR immunization clinics (measles, mumps, rubella) since the beginning of the epidemic.

No appointments are necessary for clinics. To make an appointment in the evening, call 845-364-2534 on weekdays between 9am and 5pm.

Health officials remind people suspected of measles (fever, rash or conjunctivitis, for example) to contact their health care provider before going to the doctor's office, clinic or office. hospital.
