An ingredient apparently used in the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine has the Diocese of Rockville Center asking people to avoid getting a single dose vaccine.
The diocese says the vaccine is “morally compromised” due to links to cells derived from aborted fetal tissue.
In a strongly worded statement, the diocese said: “Abortion is a morally wrong act that cannot be reversed or reduced in severity even by the good intention of helping others (i.e. by producing vaccines). “
While the diocese has not gone so far as to ban the Johnson & Johnson vaccine – it said: “For moral reasons related to their connection to the evil of abortion, it is recommended that among the alternatives available now or in the very near future, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are preferred over the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines. “
The church’s statement comes days after the Food & Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization for Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine, which health experts have lauded because it only requires one shot and is not limited by cold storage requirements.
Officials at the Johnson & Johnson company say its vaccine formula does not include any fetal tissue.
Dr Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, who was raised in the Catholic faith, last week urged Americans to take one of three coronavirus vaccines now available to them and not to not delay getting one vaccine over another.
“These are three very effective vaccines. I can tell you that I was fully vaccinated with one that was available. It was Moderna, ”says Fauci. “If I weren’t vaccinated now, and had a choice of whether to get the J&J vaccine now or wait for another vaccine, I would take whatever vaccine I have.”
The Vatican’s position differs from that of the Diocese of Rockville Center. Pope Francis said people have a moral obligation to get vaccinated.
