Apple Music’s second most-listened song of the year, “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, had an even wider reach than “The Box” worldwide, making it to the top 5 of the 100 Best Songs charts. Apple Music in 92 countries and reaching number one. 1 in 62 of them. While “Blinding Lights” had less stream than “The Box”, it racked up the most listeners overall.
One notable facet of Apple Music’s year-end rankings this year is the inclusion of two new tallies: the most shazamed songs of the year as well as the most played song lyrics on the platform. To provide the starting point for a song’s virality, Apple Music also shares the first Shazamed locations of the 25 best songs of the year.
On Shazam metrics and lyrics, “The Box” (first Shazamed in Minnesota and having racked up over 6.7 million Shazams worldwide to date) also did well, finishing in the top 100 most shazamated tracks in year and # 4 on the most read lyrics chart. “Blinding Lights”, meanwhile, was the third most shazamed track of the year (it was first Shazamed in Paris and has since collected 17.5 million Shazams worldwide) and finished in 6th. rank of the speech count.
The most shazamous song of the year, Tones And I’s viral hit “Dance Monkey” is also an all-time high on the app, having become the most shazamous song of all time with 24.6 million Shazams to date (the first being in Düsseldorf, Germany). Released for the first time in May 2019, “Dance Monkey” is also the third most listened to song of the year on Apple Music, having taken possession of the service in September 2019. A year later, it remained in the top 40 on the Global Daily Top 100 chart.
Future’s “Life is Good” feat rounds out the top 5 in song charts. Drake, who also made a top 20 on the lyrics board. Speaking of lyrics, the award for the most read lyrics of the year went (perhaps unsurprisingly) to the “WAP” feat dissected by Ben Shapiro of Cardi B. Megan Thee Stallion.
On the best albums, Lil Baby’s My turn was the second most broadcast of the year, with six of his tracks – “Whoa” (# 9), “Sum 2 Prove”, “We Paid”, “Emotionally Scarred”, “Grace” and “Commercial” – finishing in the top 100 songs. Lil Baby also scored five tracks on the Most Read Lyrics Board, including the non-My turn cut “The Bigger Picture”.
The third most listened to album of the year, Pop Smoke’s Shoot for the stars Aim for the moon, also had three Top 100 songs: “For the Night”, “Mood Swings” and “Dior”, the top two also reaching the top 100 in the lyrics chart.
Top 5 albums completed by Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake – LUV vs. World 2 (No.4) and Summer Walker Above (No.5). This latest album also listed two titles among the top 100 songs: “Playing Games” and “I’ll Kill You”.
Apple Music’s year-end previews also include some interesting snippets highlighting the global nature of the music industry in 2020. For example, the early Shazams of American pop idol Billie Eilish “All I Wanted” ”,“ Bad guy ”and“ when the party is over ”were in Moscow, Shenzen (China) and Guanajuato (Mexico), respectively. Likewise, the four Drake songs that landed in the top 100 were Shazamed first in the Dominican Republic, Israel, France and the United States, while Post Malone’s top four entries were initially Shazamed in Croatia, Italy, the United States and Mexico.
Japan – the world’s second-largest music market and the fastest-growing first market for Apple Music – also had an impact on the service’s year-end charts. “Yoru Ni Kakeru” by YOASOBI was the biggest hit to come out of the country this year, finishing at No.69 on the World’s Best Songs Chart and No.3 on the Most Read Lyrics Chart. In its native country, the track was also the second most shazamous of the year after “Dance Monkey”.
