ROME (AP) – Roger Federer has added the Italian Open to his schedule.

A day after his defeat against Dominic Thiem in three rounds in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open, Federer announced his plans in a video on Instagram on Saturday.

Federer says, "Hello everyone, I just spoke to the team and I'm happy to say that I'm coming back to Rome to play in Italy, I can not wait, it's so exciting. It's been too long, I see you there, Ciao tutti, goodbye. "

The Italian Open begins Sunday and Federer is entitled to a first-round pass as a No. 3 seed. He will face Frances Tiafoe (37) or Joao Sousa (75).

Federer is four times finalist at the Italian Open, a win that he has never won. It's one of the few important trophies that the Grand Slam winner has ever claimed.

He has jumped the dirt broom in the last two years to stay in shape for the rest of the season. He decided to come back this year in preparation for his first participation in the French Open since 2015.

Roland Garros starts on May 26th.
