Roku tests a remote with a built-in battery and customizable buttons

It looks like Roku is working on a new remote that has a rechargeable Li-ion battery. In a Reddit post spotted by The Streamable (via Zats not funny), a member of the company’s early access program shared an ad detailing Roku Voice Remote Pro. In addition to a rechargeable battery and microphone for voice commands, the $ 30 accessory includes a feature to find the device in case of loss, an audio jack for private listening, and customizable shortcuts. This last element is particularly exciting because far too many remotes, including the older ones from Roku, come with preset shortcuts.

“We’re always working to bring new products and features to Roku users, and part of that process is to publicly test new ideas with a small number of our customers,” a Roku spokesperson said. The Streamable when the website asked for information on the announcement The Reddit thread also includes comments from people who had the opportunity to test the device. “It’s easily the best remote Roku has updated,” said Reddit user Gnascher. “It incorporates all the functionality of other high-end remotes while adding a ‘Hey Roku’ style voice command (which works great in my experience) and a built-in battery.”

It’s not yet clear when (or if) Roku plans to release the Voice Remote Pro to the public. The February 19 “release date” shown on the ad appears to have been applicable only to those in the Early Access program.
