Roller Champions Preview: Roll with a potential

Roller Champions is Ubisoft's competitive online game, like roller derby. The principle is simple: throw the ball into the goal and the first five-point team wins. Roller Champions is easy to pick up, but there are some strategic options to give you something to think about and experiment with.

The matches are in 3v3 and take place in various arenas / thematic places. This is a standard roller derby track, but surrounded by high clear glass walls around the inner / outer circle, giving players more room to skate and more ways to strategize. There is only one ball and both teams are fighting for possession; your goal is to recover the ball and take it at least once around the track without interruption.

Once you have skirted the track at least once, you can throw the ball for the circular purpose located on the glass wall of the arena. The more you walk the track without losing possession of the ball, the more points you score when you score. But if the other team picks up the ball, your turns are reset, which creates a risk management system by which you are encouraged to make as many turns as possible. Because of the way in which the rounds and goals are tied, it is possible to win a goal.

The laps should not be completed by you alone. Your teammates can skate ahead and request a pass (using Y on an Xbox controller) and you can run that pass (also by pressing Y). Passing was a great way to move the ball along the track quickly, but it could also be used as a quick way to avoid losing possession of the ball when stuck.

Visual cues and smart ads in the game help players keep track of the action. When you finish a full lap and you have the opportunity to score, the circular goal is filled with the glowing color of your team. The number of turns you perform is indicated by slight neon lines on the glass walls and the announcer mentions laps, resets and comments when tests, tackles and clutch moments fall on the track. He definitely helped me understand and feel more invested in my matches.


I was not the top scorer, but I took pleasure in knocking down my opponents.

In addition, everyone on the track can be attacked at any time. Also, even though I was not the top scorer, I had the pleasure of knocking down my opponents to regain possession of my team or rushing into the competition to protect my teammates.

My happiest match was when my team played, worse than our opponents. We were down 3-0 with only one or two minutes behind (if you reach the end of the seven-minute match, the team with the most points won), but we had a great run at the end : we have completed enough laps. that when we finally scored, we got five points and won the whole thing. As in all sports, the best team does not always win and I felt satisfied with our stolen victory.


It will still take a few hours and a few matches with friends to find out whether or not this match will have a lasting impact.

Sometimes your opponents may feel impossible to catch up, but in this case, you can still go around the track in the opposite direction to get ahead of them. The same thing can apply to the offensive if you want the balloon to pass you.

You can rotate the camera freely, and the fact that the track is circular makes it easy to track the action. Still, it happened to me not to realize that someone was directly behind me and it can be painful to skate, dodge and control the camera at the same time. Visual indicators when opponents are behind you might help you, but this may have been intentionally omitted for reasons of balance.

I was quick to understand the Roller Champions and had enough fun to say it was worth trying. Nevertheless, it's hard to know if he'll have the personalization and charm that the best free games use to keep players around. It will still take a few hours and a few matches with friends to find out whether or not this match will have a lasting impact.
