Smartpthone manufacturers have not launched products with such resolution since 2012, when Nokia spoiled photo enthusiasts with the now-defunct range of PureView phones.
To do this, Sony opted for a Bayer Quad color filter with a 2×2 type configuration in which two attached pixels are sensitive to the same color. When the ambient light is sufficient, each pixel is "dosed" individually to obtain an effective resolution of 48MP. On the contrary, if the light is too weak, the two joined pixels are coupled to obtain a more accurate measurement, giving a 12MP image with a very low noise level.
Given the timing of the announcement of the new sensor, it can be assumed that Sony plans to use the Xperia XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX X86 with the Xperia XZ3 lineup, expected for its official debut in September IFA 2018.
