The technique that has only been used in pigs currently attracts between 10 and 80 times more tumor cells than current cancer detection methods, making it a tool for early detection of cancer. Until now, Sam Gambhir, a professor at Stanford University, is focusing on the use of the tube for tumor detection, although in the future it might also be used to analyze the effectiveness of disease treatment methods.

Cells that have detached from the tumor pass through the bloodstream and can serve as indicators of the presence of cancer. Unfortunately, the reduced number of tumor cells reaching the bloodstream is not high enough that cells can be identified by current techniques.
