US President Donald Trump appointed Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on Monday, Agerpres reports, citing Reuters. The nomination must be approved by the Senate, where the President's Republican Party holds the majority.

Kavanaugh, a judge of a 53-year-old Federal Court of Appeal, is known for his conservative stance. Given his age and the fact that appointments to the US Supreme Court are alive, he could leave his mark on the US Supreme Court for decades.

The judge elected by Trump replaces Justice Anthony Kennedy who also announced his withdrawal last month at the age of 81.

The president made his decision at 9:00 pm local time, with the largest audience on East Coast television in the United States, as the press had announced in the morning. It was already known that he would choose one of the four candidates, the other three being federal bailiffs – Thomas Hardiman, Raymond Ketchgege and Amy Coney Barrett.
