The number of deaths attributable to the flu tripled this year

A total of 4,680 influenza cases were confirmed in Brazil in the first seven months of 2018, compared with 1,782 cases in the same period last year, the ministry said.

The H1N1 virus was responsible for 60% of the cases this year, causing 567 deaths to date. In 2017, 73.7% of cases were caused by the H3N2 virus.

In April, the Brazilian government launched a vaccination campaign to vaccinate 54.4 million people against the flu. According to the ministry, 90% of the target group, including children, the elderly, pregnant women and indigenous people – a total of 51.4 million Brazilians – have already been vaccinated
