Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, has expressed support for the upcoming impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, telling “Fox News Sunday” that a trial is needed to achieve “truth and justice.”

Romney said the House impeachment article “suggests ungodly conduct,” but admitted that he and his fellow senators have yet to hear arguments from both sides. He said he “would do my best as a Senate juror to apply justice as well as I can understand it.”
The Republican went on to criticize Trump, not only for his words and actions in the months after the election, but for what he said before that, going right up to his first arraignment.

This is obviously very serious and an attack on the very foundation of our democracy and it is something that needs to be considered and resolved. “
Looking to the future, Romney has acknowledged that Trump will continue to influence the Republican Party, but he pointed to new voices that he believes could determine the direction the party is going. He specifically mentioned Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, and Sens. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., And Marco Rubio, R-Fla.,
Romney was also critical of Biden. As the new president called for unity, Romney said some of his executive actions during the administration’s early days were divisive.

“I think there are actions the president is taking that is going to lead to some anger and division,” Romney said. “I think, for example, to say that we are not going to allow further leases on government land for oil and gas, that has obviously hurt our rural communities very badly. Romney said Biden should be careful “not to do things that incite a lot of unnecessary anger.”
