Each week TMI’s Sam Webb, Steve Lorenz, Brice Marich and Josh Henschke get together for a podcast called “The Michigan Recruiting Insider”. Each show offers an in-depth dive into Michigan football and basketball recruiting, with unparalleled insight and insight into Wolverines recruiting targets and strategies.
Sam, Steve and Brice spend the first two segments of the podcast focusing on hot topics and pressing questions on the football recruiting side. Then in the final segment, Sam and Josh come up with the same kind of analysis for basketball recruiting.
In episode 31, Sam, Brice and Steve explain why new roles for Ron Bellamy and Sherrone moore will give Jim harbaugh arguably the strongest recruiting staff of his tenure. The crew breaks down the immediate impact of recruiting for both coaches, including how five-star CB Will Johnson is affected. Later, the trio discuss targets in the state about to rise to the plateau, a new defensive line target, and the latest transfer portal target Henry To’o To’o.
In the excerpt below, Sam and Steve highlight the immediate impact Bellamy is likely to have in recruiting Michigan State.
Sam Webb: “When maybe there was a dead end in relations for Michigan and some schools or some coaches … where maybe the communication had broken down or Michigan hadn’t had a player here or there simply because of relationships, turnover and coaches. I’ve explained this before … coaching turnover has been so common in Michigan that where you had relationships established before, when new coaches come in, you might see the links to the program disappear altogether for some of you. these high schools. the coaches. So it can get to a point where some guys just feel like they don’t have a real connection to school. And Ron Bellamy was one of the guys who, from a high school workout standpoint, would help close that gap. He was like, ‘hey guys I know we maybe don’t know as many people as we used to but this is a line of communication that we have to keep open for the kids, or that we have to make an effort to open up for the sake of children. You might have kids who want to go to Michigan. It is an avenue that we must (open). It is an effort that we may need to facilitate a little more. Now granted, Michigan had to be part of that lift as well, but there had to be some receptivity on the other side, and I think Ron Bellamy was a key to closing that gap as much as possible.
“With (Bellamy) coming into the squad, I don’t think there is any question … I get questions all the time about Bellville because there was a cavernous gap between Michigan and Belleville. In recent years. I think Ron Bellamy immediately comes to the door, and because he and Jermaine Crowell weren’t just rivals, they’re friends. They talk about players and philosophy, and they’re two guys who really, really, really respect each other. And so, if there is a dead end there, which it was, Ron Bellamy walking through the door allows you to enter Belleville High School and have a better chance with the kids than before. . People ask me over and over ever since the Ron Bellamy possibility arose. “Is Michigan going to have a photo of Bellville now?” Yes. Ron Bellamy gives you a better shot at Belleville High School. It’s not like they didn’t have a photo before. It was depressed, but it wasn’t a draw. Ron Bellamy will help you right away. And, Steve, at your point, when you look in Southeast Michigan, you have to put Ron Bellamy in Michigan, right? Well, at least in the southeastern part. And that’s where I think of Michigan with this new staff, they have a certain versatility. Because guess who else has connections in Southeast Michigan? Mike Hart in the same way Sherrone moore. Obviously, for me (Southeast Michigan) has to be Ron Bellamy’s territory. You can let down other guys while still focusing them out of state. So Grand Rapids, Flint, Saginaw, Traverse City … you can ask Ron Bellamy to focus on Southeast Michigan and have your other guys in the state target maybe guys here and there. in Southeast Michigan and then hit the outer part, and cover the state in a relationship-wise way that we haven’t seen in a while. I just think there are a lot of opportunities here.
Steve Lorenz: “The work that Sherrone moore, Josh gattis having done in the state in the last 12 months is going to be such a benefit now that you have guys who can be forces within the state. Because now all of a sudden 18 months ago you’ve gone from almost no (relationship established) in the state to four on-staff coaches who could really make a difference to any rookie in the state. ‘State. I mean, it’s a 180 where things were not that long ago. Almost since Tyrone Wheatley left. There was this time gap where the plan seemed almost nonexistent with regards to the situation in the state. So yeah, you bring Ron, obviously it would be unfathomable for him not to be the main guy in Southeast Michigan. I can’t imagine they won’t try to enjoy it as much as they can. But again you said Mike Hart had experience there. And like I said, Sherrone moore really does a really great job of being tossed into the mix there. And again, back to Sherrone moore and just the job he did as a recruiter … and Josh Gattis as well as. He also did some work. I think they kind of split the situation up for a while when they were reorganizing their situation. So yes, a lot of real possibilities. And like you said, Michigan State, new coaching staff … I feel like they’re working pretty hard. I will pay tribute to the State of Michigan. We hear a little more about them as they are. As you will with a new head coach and new staff. But man, Michigan really got it set up for a lot of guys to be okay. I’ll never say something like they’re going to sweep, or all the kids in the state are Michigan locks, because they won’t. But it’s by far the best their staff have looked at from a recruiting standpoint in the state since Harbaugh has been there. I mean, not even close.
