Even more “scary” than Twitter suppressing the president Donald trumpaccount of Gov. Ron DeSantis said, tech companies are conspiring against Parler.
Speaking at an opening luncheon at a legislative policy conference in Austin, Texas on Thursday, the governor addressed recent moves by Google, Apple and Amazon to restrict Talking after the US Capitol. The social media platform, used primarily by conservatives, is touting itself as an uncensored alternative to Twitter.
“What really bothered me was the way they beheaded this company, Parler,” DeSantis said. “You always said hey, it’s a market, you don’t like Twitter, create your own competitor. Well, they did.
After the riot, Twitter began removing some conservative accounts, including the president’s. Users flocked to Speak Like a Safe Harbor because Twitter sided with the president-elect Joe bidenadministration, the governor said.
Google removed the Talking smartphone app from its App Store on Friday for allowing posts that seek to “incite continued violence in the United States.” Apple followed suit on Saturday night after giving Speak 24 Hours to address complaints that it was being used to “plan and facilitate even more illegal and dangerous activities.” The platform will need to address public safety concerns before it is restored, Apple said.
Amazon struck another blow on Saturday, informing Parler that it should be looking for a new web hosting service starting at midnight Sunday. He reminded Parler in a letter, first reported by Buzzfeed, that he had informed it in the past few weeks of 98 examples of posts “that clearly encourage and incite violence” and said the platform “Poses a very real risk to public safety”.
“Not only did Apple abandon them, but not only did you have other things, but they took them off Amazon’s web server. The lawyers have resigned. They couldn’t even do that, ”he added. “It was a coordinated assault on a company that was trying to compete.”
The conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation think tank holds its policy conference every year. Texas’ biennial legislative session began on Tuesday.
DeSantis also said he was disturbed during the presidential election to see “credible articles” on Hunter Biden, the son of the elected president, “actively repressed”. These actions affected the election, he said.
“Big Tech, they could actually delete this information, and that’s just OK?” DeSantis asked. “It’s electoral meddling, if you want to be honest about it, and it’s something that really needs to be addressed.”
In response to decisions by Facebook and Twitter to permanently ban Trump, Zephyrhills Republican Sen. Danny Bourgeois legislation filed (SB 520) Monday would be require social media sites to provide notice to users who have been sanctioned by the platform.
