A crowd of the world’s top golfers paid tribute to Tiger Woods on Sunday after being seriously injured in a car crash earlier this week.
Woods is famous for wearing a red shirt and black pants on the last day of tournaments. At the WGC-Workday Championship in Florida on Sunday, golfers such as Jason Day, Tony Finau, Tommy Fleetwood, Sebastian Munoz, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed wore red as a tribute to Woods.
Max Homa, who won the Genesis Invitational last week and received the Woods Trophy, was abused on social media Saturday for saying he would not wear red and black. He later explained that he was prevented from doing so due to his sponsorship duties.
“I mean this without hyperbole, it’s the strangest thing I’ve ever experienced on Twitter lol,” Homa wrote. “I like Tiger more than you guys. Promise. Listen to an interview from last week. The red and black of tomorrow don’t prove it. A lifelong attempt to imitate his approach to the game does.
Meanwhile, at the Puerto Rico Championship, the field team also wore red and black.
Woods has worn red and black on Sunday since his debut as a golfer. He said he was inspired to do it by his mother, Tida. “I wear red on Sunday because my mom thinks it’s my power color,” Woods said of the outfit. “And you know you should always listen to your mom.”
Woods had surgery for multiple fractures to his right leg after Tuesday’s car crash in Los Angeles. A local policeman said he was “very lucky” to have survived. His injuries are serious enough that it is doubtful whether the 15-time major champion will ever return to professional golf.
