US billionaire Ross Perot, who has twice run for president as an independent, has died at age 89, his family said.

A self-employed entrepreneur, he founded Electronic Data Systems in 1962 and Perot Systems in the 1980s.

But he was best known for taking part in the 1992 campaign, advocating for balanced budgets and calling for an end to offshoring jobs abroad.

Democrat Bill Clinton won the three-man race in which Perot won nearly 19% of the vote.

Mr. Perot returned to the presidency in 1996, after forming the Reform Party.
