Ross Perot, the billionaire tycoon who staged two unsuccessful third-party presidential campaigns in the 1990s, died Tuesday, confirmed James Fuller family spokesman CNN. He was 89 years old.
A billionaire in his mid-fifties after giving over to General Motors the data-processing company he founded, Electronic Data Systems, for $ 2.5 billion, Perot set up one of the most prestigious candidacies for the presidency of American history in 1992 when he garnered nearly 19% of the vote. He finished third behind Bill Clinton and outgoing President George H. W. Buisson.
Perot directly challenged Clinton and Bush's support for the North American Free Trade Agreement during the election cycle, and said the treaty would result in job losses in the United States.
In 1995, he created the Reform Party and, the following year, received 8% of the vote in the presidential election as a party candidate.
