Chaos closer
According to manager Torey Lovullo, the Diamondbacks won’t name a practice closer to spring. This is a bit surprising as rumors earlier in the offseason were that Joakim Soria took less money to sign in Arizona to close. However, Soria struggled, allowing five earned runs in 4.2 innings. His male competition, Stefan Crichton, was even worse. The dark horse is JB Bukauskas. Bukauskas is a former best prospect with five legitimate offers and pitched 7.2 innings allowing no runs on just three hits and zero walks. I think Soria is still the favorite for saves, but Bukauskas is very interesting.
Quick shots
A day after leaving his start with a blister problem, Shohei Ohtani was in the lineup as the DH Angels. It’s good to see that he at least managed to strike. The Angels also don’t appear to be concerned about the blistering issue in terms of pitching, so everything seems to be going well for the start of the season.
Andrew Vaughn has officially made the White Sox opening day roster. It looks like they will try to play with him in left field which would be a nice addition to his positional flexibility.
Mike Soroka made his first appearance in the spring on Tuesday, making two innings and allowing one run, striking two and allowing two hits and two goals. It’s good to see Soroka pitch and pitch pretty well for her first outing. However, he isn’t expected to return until the end of April until he doesn’t have a setback, which can make him difficult to field in the leagues if you already have an injury or two. I’ve passed him out so far this draft season, but I’m pushing him to get back in shape.
Various news and notes
On Monday, Stephen Strasburg pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three on the exit. The encouraging part was that he was able to throw 98 pitches and cover first base on a pitch. However, after hearing that he was working at a reduced speed of Peter ChristensenI spent Monday night reviewing the tee as much as possible and recording the speed of every fastball he threw. There was a power outage in the second run so there is no video from the third run. However, he sat 90-93 early with a pitch to 94. By the fourth inning, he sat 88-91 hitting 93 once. Control was bad until the last heat. His trick was very striking until the fifth inning, but even then it was disappointing. This is quite worrying for me and I moved it considerably in my board before my last draft of the year tonight.
Dustin May won the fifth starting position for the Dodgers, which means David Price and Tony Gonsolin will head to the bullpen. This is a bit surprising as it looked like May was destined either to return to the miners or to the bullpen. However, he’s been electric this spring, pitching 19 innings with 21 strikeouts and 2.37 ERA. It feels like a trap situation as the Dodgers are known to play with their rotation and all three guys could be bounced back. I’ve avoided most of the time this draft season and will likely continue to do so.
Rougned Odor will not be on the Ranger roster on opening day. Odor never quite kept the promise we saw early in his career and will likely get another shot elsewhere. In the meantime, Nick Solak is expected to be the everyday second baseman and there will likely be a third-place rotation between Brock Holt, Charlie Culberson and Eli White. White is the only one that is interesting for the fancy because it has a decent hitting tool and good speed that allowed it to hit .286 with three stolen bases in the spring. If he finds himself with an everyday role, he could be a cheap game of speed in a team that led the Majors in stolen base attempts during spring practice.
