Psychonauts 2 summary reviews

16 years after the original, Psychonauts 2 has finally arrived. Raz is back with another wild adventure that takes place directly after the events of the first game, and it looks like the long, long wait is worth it. Reviews are now pouring in from various outlets on the internet and almost all of them have something good to say.

It’s worth noting that all of the verdicts below cover both the Xbox Series X | S and PC versions of the game. At this time, there isn’t a single PS4 review. This explains why we had no chance to find a revision code. Our thoughts will not be published on the site for some time, if ever. Let’s see what everyone thought of Psychonauts 2, though.

It’s really amazing how amazing Psychonauts 2 is. After 16 years, expectations for the sequel were so high that it seemed impossible to meet them. We don’t know how they did it, but the wizards of Double Fine not only encountered them, but crushed them with ease. Psychonauts 2 is an extraordinary achievement in both gameplay and storytelling, balancing heavy sanity themes with its whimsical world. In less hands it could have been a disaster, but the team took every aspect of the original game, took inspiration from it, and respected the fan base in the process. Psychonauts 2 is the best game of 2021 to date and one of the biggest sequels ever made.

Psychonauts 2 is, once again, a universe of damaged teachers and teaching environments, a space to reflect through dark thoughts with varying degrees of seriousness and absurdity. His worlds are incomparable works of invention, his characters a joy to exist alongside them. I might have missed it the first time around, but I’m happy that games like this are still playing.

I loved almost every second of Psychonauts 2. It achieves something that I don’t often see in games – a continual sense of dread as each of its worlds unfold. It took 16 years to come out, but Double Fine delivered an incredible sequel. I hope we will have a third installment that will not take so long to create.

On the surface, Psychonauts 2 is an engaging, ambitious, and polished take on colorful 3D platforms. However, the most rewarding aspect wasn’t just mastering your rigs or combat, but removing the layers to see what’s underneath; to take a closer look at its characters, the depth of their struggles, fears and regrets, which all serve as the basis of the game. It’s a moving, hilarious and at times devastating story, but a story about forgiveness and second chances . It’s a stunning achievement in almost every way and the epitome of Double Fine’s mastery in story, gameplay, and distinct direction, making it the studio’s best game to date.

Even in these collectible curse moments, I had absolute fun playing Psychonauts 2. It’s rare for a long-awaited sequel to do most things right, but this is one of those moments and I am confident to say that Psychonauts 2 is Double Fine the best game to date and one of the first contenders for the title of game of the year. Don’t make us wait a decade for the next.

IGN – 8/10

The weird and wonderfully written story of Psychonauts 2 is full of interesting and nuanced characters that I immediately fell in love with. Most of his new ideas go a long way in elevating the Psychonauts formula into the modern era, though his enticing new teamable pin system can be a bit too stingy. Double Fine also did a great job of expanding this universe into both bigger and more intimate threats without losing the cheerful, adventurous vibes of the original’s childhood. It may bring in a bit of that mid-2000s action platforming awkwardness, but Psychonauts 2 is still pretty much everything I could have hoped for from a sequel to one of my favorite games.

It’s always a risk to create a sequel to a cult classic so long after the original, but in Psychonauts 2, Double Fine not only created a game that respects the original and takes its characters to new heights, they set themselves, and new Microsoft owners, with a platform franchise that can thrive for years to come.
