Roundtree suffers from a serious injury to the spine

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois junior defensive end Bobby Roundtree suffered a serious spinal injury Saturday in a swimming accident near his home in Largo, Florida.

Roundtree is currently recovering at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Florida. No additional information is available at the moment.

"Bobby Roundtree is exactly what you want in a student-athlete," said Illinois coach Lovie Smith in a statement. "He is a hard worker, reliable, a dedicated student and a leader. This is devastating for his teammates, the entire Fighting Illini family, his family and his friends. We will give all possible support to Bobby in his fight to recover. If you like, leave Bobby and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Smith along with several Illini coaches as well as family and friends gathered at the Mease Countryside Hospital over the weekend.

Roundtree played all 24 games in his first two seasons in Illinois and made 20 starts. He earned the All-Big Ten honorable mention status after the 2018 season after finishing the year with 66 tackles, 12 1/2 tackles against loss, 7 1/2 sacks, 7 missed passes, 4 assists quarter and a forced escape. Roundtree led the Illini in fights for loss, sacks and breakouts.
