CHAMPAIGN – Illinois junior defensive end Bobby Roundtree suffered a serious spinal injury Saturday in a swimming accident near his home in Largo, Florida.
Roundtree is currently recovering at Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor, Florida. No additional information is available at the moment.
"Bobby Roundtree is exactly what you want in a student-athlete," said Illinois coach Lovie Smith in a statement. "He is a hard worker, reliable, a dedicated student and a leader. This is devastating for his teammates, the entire Fighting Illini family, his family and his friends. We will give all possible support to Bobby in his fight to recover. If you like, leave Bobby and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Smith along with several Illini coaches as well as family and friends gathered at the Mease Countryside Hospital over the weekend.
