Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Gary Lineker agree on Manchester United’s penalty claim against Chelsea

Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Gary Lineker all said Manchester United should have received a penalty against Chelsea.

United were hoping to get a kick out after VAR asked referee Stuart Attwell to review an incident involving Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mason Greenwood where the ball appeared to hit the arm of the former.

However, despite watching a replay on the Field Monitor, Attwell stuck to his original decision and chose not to point to the spot.

“There is no doubt that earlier in the season it would have been a penalty,” Neville said in a co-comment during the review. “I think he’s going to give a penalty. I think Hudson-Odoi’s panic is the fact that his arm shouldn’t really be there, he tries to tuck his body in but then pushes it away.

“There is no doubt two or three months ago it is a penalty, and there is no doubt two or three months ago that the referee on the field would have respected the dismissal but the referees are more daring and the laws of handball are changed before our eyes as the season progresses.

“You talk about an unnatural position, I just think it’s probably a penalty because of the height of the ball, it’s not exactly hit against him. Tuchel and Solskjaer are arguing.

“We’ve seen some stupid ones this season when he’s been run over on a player and you’re thinking, ‘how is that a penalty?’ Hudson-Odoi can see the ball traveling from a distance, it’s in the air and its hand pulls him away from Greenwood.

“It’s interesting because when the instance actually happened, the Chelsea players were asking for a handball from Greenwood.”

Lineker agreed with Neville’s verdict and he wrote on Twitter: “I hate the current handball law, but under current guidelines it is a penalty.”

Keane also disagreed with Attwell’s decision, saying Hudson-Odoi moved his hand towards the ball: “We’ve seen them before for incidents like this.

“When he stopped the game and went to the screen, the Chelsea players are certainly worried, they are all around the referee, which is probably not helpful. He raises his hand towards the ball, he there is no escaping it.

“We saw them given, we don’t want players to be punished for it, but he is raising his hand.”
