The construction of the next giant Royal Caribbean vessel has officially begun.

The company's officials announced Thursday that the cruise company had cut the steel from its fifth Oasis class ship, which will become the world's largest cruise ship in its 2021 debut.

The new vessel, which has not yet been named, will be built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, making it the third ship of the Oasis class built on the shipyard.

Holding the title of the largest cruise ship in the world will not be new to Royal Caribbean – the line Symphony of the Seas is already the largest in the world and regularly makes trips to the Caribbean from Miami.

Each of the five Royal Caribbean Oasis class ships was the world's largest in their debut, starting with Oasis of the Seas in 2008.

Since then, each ship has slightly exceeded the size of its predecessor – a trend that, according to the Royal Caribbean General Manager, will continue with the last ship, exceeding 228,081 gross tonnes of Symphony of the Seas, with a capacity of 6 680 people.

Bayley also said that another Oasis class ship would immediately follow, the sixth vessel in the class to debut in 2023.

The cruise line company announced in a press release that the next two Oasis ships "will combine the iconic concept of the seven quarters of its sister ships with a bold and unexpected range of thrilling experiences, imaginative dinners, unprecedented entertainment and advanced technologies ".
