The Athletics reinforced their beleaguered rotation by acquiring right-wing Homer Bailey of the Kansas City Royals, announced Sunday in Oakland.

Bailey, 33, experienced a rebirth in 2019, recording its highest exit rate in more than five years, with a record of 7-6 and a 4.80 ERA – its best figure in this category since 2014. His numbers also improved over the last month and a half, since he had earned a 3.48 silver medal in June, a 3-1 record, and an average of 3.60. in July.

Bailey was scheduled Sunday for Kansas City against the Detroit Tigers, but he was struck out of the match shortly before his scheduled start.

In exchange, the Royals received Kevin Merrell, a 23-year-old Double-A championship player, who hit .246 / .292 / .339 and whose biggest attribute is his speed.

While Bailey earns $ 23 million this season, Oakland will lag behind for less than $ 250,000. After negotiating for him a salt-wage business during the winter, the Los Angeles Dodgers cut off Bailey and assumed almost all of his contract. The Royals have signed for the $ 555,000 minimum of Major League, and Oakland will pay a pro rata portion for the remainder of the season.

At 52-41, Oakland is currently in second place in the AHL and ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays to win the most 1½ wild cards. The A's are at six games of the Houston Astros in western Alberta, although their passing differential of over-80s is similar to that of the plus-86 Astros.

Oakland's rotation, which was matched by Coach Frankie Montas' PED suspension, was nonetheless solid, backed by one of the best defenses in baseball. Incoming Mike Fiers, Brett Anderson and Chris Bassitt all have inverted electronic auctions below 4.00. Oakland could also see reinforcements coming off the injured list, with Jharel Cotton in Triple-A recovering from an operation at Tommy John and Sean Manaea in Class A after a shoulder operation.

Kansas City is expected to handle more players before the July 31 trade deadline, including replacement Jake Diekman and, if they pay a large portion of his salary, get closer to Ian Kennedy.
