They have not won any of their last 10 series, including all three games this weekend in Los Angeles. But the Royals found a way to get a win in their series by beating the Angels, 5-1, Sunday afternoon.
The kicker was a third round of three innings. Whit Merrifield walked with Nicky Lopez. Adalberto Mondesi then followed with a single to charge the goals, but two errors were made by Los Angeles on the same game, allowing a point to score and everyone to progress. Hunter Dozier made the mistake by hammering a 1-2 with two outs in the center-right, scoring a 3-0.
The Angels earned a point on the fourth goal, but Chris Owings, of all players, scored one point on a single RBI in the sixth. The single was enough for Rex Hudler to explain why Owings, now 7 years old for the last 74, deserves a lot of patience. "You can not bury a guy with seven years of major league experience on the bench!" In all fairness, he is right. The property should not be buried on the bench. It should be missing from the list. Or, if you opt for the buried theme, bury it in a trash and leave it there or something like that.
Kansas City added its fifth run to the ninth inning when Alex Gordon was hit by a throw with two outs. He has 34 RBI this year in 44 games. In 2017, he had 45 RBIs in 148 games.
Danny Duffy did a good job in his hometown of Los Angeles. He made six innings, allowing only one point and took out five. He was not very efficient, he needed 106 shots to get 18 outs, but it was better than his last outing. He is 3-1 for the year and claims a 3.45 ERA in five starts, which is better than he had in 2018.
Jake Diekman also did a very good job in the eighth inning because he was summoned after the return of a single. He blew his three hitters, hitting all three. He has now retired 16 batters in eight innings started in May.
They finally beat Tyler Skaggs! I feel like I saw Tyler Skaggs play eight games against the Royals, and it seems they have never scored a point against that guy. Today, they received him three times and gave him a nice L. I had been waiting for a while.
The Royals are 16-31. They are exactly where they were last year. They played a more difficult program, but you can take into account any excuses you wish. This team should have a better record and must start winning series.
Next step: The Royals travel to St. Louis for a weekly series with the Cardinals. They get up tomorrow before starting filming Tuesday night. Homer Bailey and Michael Wacha are the opponents.
