The Royals announced the shortstop on Wednesday Adalberto Mondesi was placed on the casualty list at 10 days due to a right oblique deformity. The movement is retroactive to March 30. Nicky lopez is in place from the team’s alternate site to take Mondesi’s place on the opening day list.
It’s an out of the ordinary placement, as Mondesi played as recently as Monday and hasn’t been known to tackle pain in his oblique. The 25-year-old speedster posted a .303 / .343 / .606 slash with two homers, one triple, two doubles and two stolen bases in 36 appearances on the field this spring. He was limited at the start of camp after being hit by a kick toss, but had put that minor injury behind him.
It’s a sour note to start the season on for Mondesi, who played 59 of the Royals’ 60 games last season while cutting a combined .256 / .294 / .416 with 24 league-leading interceptions. He has, however, suffered from shoulder and groin injuries in previous seasons and will now be out for at least a week at the start of the season – maybe a little more. The Royals have yet to announce a timeline on Mondesi or the strain’s rank, but it’s common for oblique strains to sideline players for more than a month. The Royals will surely have more information on his status later today when skipper Mike Matheny meets reporters.
With Mondesi sidelined for now, it will likely fall on the Lopez to handle the day-to-day work at shortstop. The 26-year-old is known as a solid defender, but only managed a .228 / .279 / .307 slash in 594 big league appearances.
For much of the offseason, Lopez was expected to be the Royals’ primary second baseman in 2021 – or at least have a good chance of winning the job at camp. However, his .118 / .231 / .147 hitting line through 39 appearances in the Cactus League left him as a strange man at the end of the camp. Kansas City picked him on Monday, deciding to move instead Whit merrifield return to the infield to cover the second goal and leave the outside players Michael a taylor, Kyle isbel, Ryan mcbroom and Jarrod Dyson in the mix for playing time in the center and on the right alongside the left fielder Andrew Benintendi .
