Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani has tested positive for Covid-19, the president tweeted on Sunday.
Giuliani, 76, and former New York mayor, led Trump’s attempt to reverse his electoral defeat to Joe Biden, through lawsuits in battlefield states.
Trump did not say when Giuliani tested positive or if he was showing symptoms.
“Rudy Giuliani, by far the greatest mayor in New York history, and who worked tirelessly to denounce the most corrupt (by far!) Elections in U.S. history, has tested positive for the Chinese virus, “Trump tweeted, using a racist term for the coronavirus.
“Get Rudy well soon, we’ll continue !!!”
Giuliani traveled frequently in the aftermath of the election and often appears in public without a mask.
Last week, he appeared unmasked before Michigan state lawmakers to challenge votes in the state. On Thursday, he spoke outside the Georgia Capitol building during a crowded legislative session, still without a mask.
Trump himself contracted Covid-19 in October, spending three days in a hospital near Washington DC.
At least 40 people in the president’s orbit have tested positive since the end of September, including First Lady Melania Trump, her son Barron, Donald Trump Jr, and senior aides and Republican politicians.
The vaccines are close to being approved for use, but the pandemic has increased in recent months, as Trump has come under fire for seemingly giving up the fight for control.
Johns Hopkins University recorded 213,875 new cases in the United States on Saturday. Amid numbers made worse by Thanksgiving trips and gatherings whose impact experts say is not yet apparent, there have been 2,254 new deaths, bringing the total death toll to the United States 280,979 in nearly 14.6 million cases.
Trump has repeatedly played down the coronavirus and has resisted public health guidelines intended to prevent the spread of the disease. As Christmas approaches, the White House is throwing a series of holiday celebrations with large crowds inside. Photos from a Tuesday party showed people without masks engaging in the festivities.
On Sunday, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force Deborah Birx was asked about contradictions between Trump’s actions and comments and public health guidance.
“I hear community members come back to these situations, repeat that masks don’t work, repeat that we should work on herd immunity, repeat that gatherings don’t translate into super-propagative events,” Birx told NBC’s Meet the Press. .
“And I think our job is to constantly say that these are myths.”
