The Los Angeles Lakers should hire Tyronn Lue as the next head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski ESPN, although a formal offer has not yet been made.
This comes as a result of Wojnarowski and Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium report Phoenix Suns hire Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams as next head coach.
Lue, 42, is a former player who has been head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for four seasons. He helped the Cavaliers win an NBA title in the 2015-16 campaign. He was sacked just six games this season as the Cavaliers went into rebuilding mode after LeBron James' departure last summer.
This connection with James is probably one of the factors of the Lakers' interest in Lue, although it does not help the public to think that it is James who elbows behind the scenes. This assumption may be unfair, but it is an assumption that exists, at least in some corners.

If Lue is actually appointed head coach, he will have a huge task ahead of him. The Lakers were a major disappointment in James' first season, recording a record 37-45. While the team had to deal with his injury, a team led by James who had missed the playoffs was a shock.
Lue's job will be to bring the Lakers back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign. He could potentially do it with a new team because the Lakers should make a big effort to get big free agents this summer.
If they fail in this effort and can not add stars via exchanges, then Lue will have to make the most of the young core of the team, facing James, who has experienced difficulties sometimes last season. In either case, Lue will have a recovery project on her hands.
