SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Last September, no one increased their stock of Aramis Garcia, who scored four goals in a late-season audition and impressed the staff with how well he went on defense. But even in the middle of this race, Garcia knew that he still had a lot of work to do.
The young catcher spent part of September questioning his teammates about private coaches that were used during the off season. He chose Craig Wallenbrock, a renowned instructor from Southern California. Garcia was so intent on making changes that after his wedding, he spent the first six weeks of his wedding in Santa Clarita over the weekend to work on his momentum. Garcia also worked with coach-striker Alonzo Powell at the team's facilities in Scottsdale.
"I just knew I had to make some adjustments," he said. "There were some inefficiencies in my swing that I had to clean up."
Garcia 's focus is mainly on work in the middle of the field and during the first two weeks of stick training this spring, he repeatedly peppered the gaps and went in the other direction with ease and power.
"It's a real revelation for me," said Farhan Zaidi after his first long look at Garcia. "The power has been really impressive."
Garcia has two homers this spring, including one off the dash against the A last weekend. He has a .823 OPS with the time of the decision coming soon.
The Giants need a durable backup early because Buster Posey will be played slowly. Garcia and veteran Rene Rivera separated from what was originally a big package. Stephen Vogt should enter the futures mix, but will probably not be ready for the opening day. The Giants must decide whether they will join Rivera, who was there before, or see if Garcia can continue to progress at the big leagues.

They left the door open without signing Nick Hundley again, partly because of what Garcia showed in September. He is eager to take advantage of this situation and has enjoyed a one-month competition for the substitute position.
"I did not expect them to just give me the job," he said. "They have always brought veterans and I like it. You start working with guys who have been around and you can go from the front. It's great to be around these guys. "
