NEW YORK – Someone had to go there.
In order to make room for starting pitcher Luis Severino, the Yankees have named field player Breyvic Valera for an assignment before Tuesday's game against the Angels at Yankee Stadium.
Severino was returning from the 60-day casualty list, having missed the entire season due to straight rotator cuff pains that turned into a grade 2 strain on the right. The right-hander of 25 years made his first start of the season. In February, he agreed to a $ 40 million four-year contract extension with the Yankees.
The Yankees claimed Valera derogations from the Giants in May.
In 12 major league games, Valera hit .219 with no free-kicks and three runs with a .647 opportunity. At Triple A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre, Valera was shown offensively. He hit .315 with 13 explosions, 49 RBIs and .903 points of opportunity in 83 games.
Valera was one of the many bodies the Yankees needed while registering a record of MLB players – 30 players on the wounded list this season.
