Terrible.
That's the word of junior J.K. Dobbins describing his 2018 season.
If the Texan product considers a second consecutive 1,000-yard season, a feat achieved by fewer than 10 players in the program's history, "terrible," Ohio State should not worry about its departure as than leaving.
What is worrisome is that 15 fall training camps, head coach Ryan Day have not yet named Dobbins' replacement.
"I do not know, I do not know," Day said on Monday's backup battle.
He spoke of a few players, but no running back in front of Dobbins on the Ohio State roster had 300 yards or more in a season.
Junior Redshirt Demario McCall seems to be the likely option in second on the depth card, and Day said he had a "high leg" on Monday. He could change pace with his speed and athleticism when Dobbins needed rest, skills that he showed on a handful of over 30-yard passes.
However, the 195-pound weight indicated by the McCall team on a 5-foot-9 frame is not the usual size for a dropped back. If Dobbins were to be unavailable for any reason during the season, McCall could face problems handling a significant workload.
That said, Day likes what he saw at the camp.
"I think it can really be a weapon for us," Day said.
Master Teague Freshman Redshirt is inscribed in this 5-foot-11-inch, 220-pound mold. He served as the third channel in 2018.
His problem is the lack of experience, now in his second year with the program. His injuries prevented him from playing during the first two weeks of the fall camp, and a total of 106 career rushing yards did not escape him.
"He was restricted to the whole camp, which is difficult, I know, frustrating for him," said Day.
There are only two new students left in Marcus Crowley and Steele Chambers. Both were 4-star candidates of the 2019 promotion.
Dobbins like what he saw from the group behind him.
"Everyone has done a good job," said Dobbins. "Learn the offense, run hard, practice hard."
The lack of experience, however, raises concerns. McCall is the only top player in the freshman class behind Dobbins, and he bounced back between H-back and running back in his time with the Buckeyes.
Sophomore quarterback Justin Fields will help alleviate some problems related to his gaming ability, but having a running party-centric feature-driven and the absence of # 2 established is like a tense game without safety net.
Buckeyes are better served to bind something.
