A judge sentenced Russell Courtier to life imprisonment for the racially motivated murder of 19-year-old Larnell Bruce. It will not have the possibility of a parole before 28 years of age.

According to the prosecution, on August 10, 2016, Broker and Bruce allegedly engaged in a physical brawl in front of a convenience store in Gresham, Oregon, just outside of Portland.

Bruce tried to leave, but Broker climbed into a jeep to pursue him. The authorities watched the surveillance video showing Bruce trying to escape from Broker while he was heading towards him.

Police responded to a call for a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian and found that Bruce was suffering from "serious injuries," the Multnomah District Attorney's Office said. Bruce died of these injuries at a nearby hospital.

Courtier had a "racist desire to be part of a" fraternity ""

Last month, a jury declared the 40-year-old courtier guilty of murder, hit and run and intimidation. In Oregon, bullying is a hate crime.

Prosecutors argued that Broker had killed Bruce because of the color of his skin.

In a statement, Attorney David Hannon said that Broker did not need to be part of the Kindred European gang and that his membership "stemmed solely from his racist desire to be part of a" fraternity "". The jury found that Broker was "motivated by his perception of Mr. Bruce's breed or the color of his skin".

Last year, Broker pleaded guilty to an assault charge resulting in a fight in 2015. According to the police report, Broker was playing billiards late at night and a man of race White has qualified Broker of "fake sailor". Irritated, Broker hit with a billiard ball.

Courtier's girlfriend, 37-year-old Colleen Hunt, pleaded guilty last month to the charge of manslaughter, as well as for aiding and abetting Broker in the murder of Bruce. She admitted to having let Broker use her Jeep to sue Bruce.

She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office announced.

Broker's defense attorney, Kevin Sali, declined to comment on CNN's sentence.

A Judicial Assistant Judge Jerry Hodson, who presided over the case, also declined to comment.
