Russell Wilson trade could cause chaos in 2021 NFL draft

Russell Wilson’s potential divorce from the Seattle Seahawks appears to have become a little more likely, with the Dallas Cowboys on his wishlist of potential new teams.

Following a report from The Athletic that Wilson discussed possible business destinations with the Seahawks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Wilson has not requested a trade and would like to stay in Seattle, but would only consider the Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears.

Additionally, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Wilson does not expect to be traded at this time, but several league executives believe he will eventually be made available by the Seahawks.

If a deal were made it would have a seismic impact on the league, but it’s just a trade with the Cowboys that would change this year’s draft significantly.

Indeed, Dallas is the only franchise in this quartet of teams that has a top 10 pick in 2021. A trade with the Saints, Raiders or Bears wouldn’t do much to influence the first round this year, but a deal with the Cowboys could create chaos.

What a possible Cowboys deal would look like

Seattle would obviously require the 10th overall pick in any deal, putting the Seahawks in a position to potentially draft Wilson’s successor.

Wilson’s arrival in Dallas would obviously make Dak Prescott surplus to needs. The Cowboys could potentially tag and trade Prescott or just let him walk in free will.

In either scenario, the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Carolina Panthers could be involved in the tender. The prospect of another team in the top 10 not needing to draft a quarterback could lead callers out of the group after Trevor Lawrence slips across the board and quarterback teams scramble to trade and catch them.

Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance will all be in high demand, and the teams on-site to write one will almost certainly come up with business offers. But a Wilson trade to Dallas would increase the odds of a draft-day deal for one of the top quarterback prospects.
