Russell Wilson was not in favor of firing Brian Schottenheimer

The Seahawks sacked offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on Tuesday. Russell Wilson made it clear on Thursday that he was just the quarterback and would have preferred Schottenheimer’s return.

“I am paid a decent amount but coach [Pete Carroll] makes those decisions, ”Wilson said, via Gregg Bell of The News Tribune.

Wilson said ‘no’ twice when asked if he was in favor of Schottenheimer’s departure after three seasons. The team cited “philosophical differences” as the reason for the dismissal.

“I think it wasn’t my decision to change ‘Schotty’,” Wilson said. “But I think Coach Carroll made that decision. I think I trust his decision. But at the same time, obviously Schotty and I were so close. I mean, he’s going to be a great coach elsewhere.

“But what I’m in favor is that our football team is improving. If you ask me what’s really important is winning championships. This is what I am in favor of. I think what’s really critical is whatever decision – whether it’s the offensive coordinator or the guys we sign or draft for every decision throughout the season, the offseason, everything in between – philosophy, the most important thing is this winning process, and by doing everything we make sure to do it. That’s what I’m always in favor of is winning. So Coach Carroll decided it was time to make a change. Look, he’s been doing this a lot longer than me. So you have to trust his decision.

Wilson, however, wants a say in who the Seahawks hire to replace Schottenheimer.

“I think it’s super important,” Wilson said. “I think Coach Carroll and I have to be on the same page. We’ve obviously been able to talk over the past three days, Coach Carroll and I, about a lot of different things and everything and really trying to figure out, ‘OK, you know how far can we go? Where are we going? What is the plan?’ and all that. And so I think a lot of it is for me and my power trainer to hopefully be able to collaborate on the thinking process of the next person and really that person to really help make an impact on that. football team, this organization, really be a great coach. for us and help us lead to the promised land, of course.

The Seahawks have averaged 34.3 points per game in the first eight games. They average 22.8 points the rest of the season.

After being an MVP contender in the first half of the season, Wilson averaged 223.5 passing yards per game and threw 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in the last 10 games, including the wildcard loss. .
