The Seahawks are looking for an offensive coordinator after the team decided to part ways with Brian Schottenheimer on Tuesday.
The man known as “Schotty” spent three seasons in Seattle and the Seahawks have recorded historic numbers during that time.
But after a tough and early playoff exit last weekend against the Los Angeles Rams, it emerged the Seahawks might need to make some coaching changes.
Head Coach Pete Carroll commented on the state of his offense on Monday morning, saying: “We have to get the ball spinning better, not even better, we have to do it more. We have to dictate what happens with people. that we play., and that’s one of the ways to do it. “
He also said Schottenheimer will be back.
However, this was really not the case. Citing “philosophical differences”, the team decided otherwise 24 hours later.
It’s not hard to read between the lines. Seattle had an CO who preferred to pass the ball and a head coach who wanted to run it more. Something had to give and Carroll held the power.
After the news broke on Tuesday, Seattle was rocked. But no one – the coaches, the players, the fans – will be more affected by the change than Pro-Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson.
Wilson, hearing the news, took to social media to write an open letter to his now former offensive coordinator.
Grateful could be an understatement.
Over the past three seasons, Schotty, Russ and the Seahawks got a 33-15 combined and had an offense that was almost unstoppable.
This season alone, Wilson posted a career-high 40 touchdowns and finished just eighty yards off a new career-high passing yards with 4,212 yards. His 384 successes, 558 attempts and a 68.8% completion percentage were all career highs.
In the past three seasons, Wilson has totaled 11,770 yards, 106 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. Although he threw 13 interceptions, a career high this season, it was certainly a byproduct of passing more than ever.
It’s interesting that Seattle made this move with Carroll wanting to run more. In fact, it just doesn’t make sense. Seattle has a talented MVP at quarterback and with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, he has the best wide receiver duo in the league. Metcalf alone is one of the best receivers in the league, drawing comparisons to Calvin Johnson.
Another season for Metcalf, Lockett and Wilson growing up under Schottenheimer would have been frightening for the NFL. Instead, Carrol and Co. opened the search for the team’s next player.
Wherever Schotty lands, his new town will certainly be happy to have him.
