Filming for the first feature film to be shot in space is underway following the arrival of Russian actor Yulia Sherepild and director Klim Shipenko at the. Their film, The challenge, will feature approximately 35 to 40 minutes of scenes filmed on the space station, depending on . The film is about a surgeon (Sherepild) who goes on an emergency mission to the ISS to save the life of a cosmonaut (Shipenko).
The two cosmonauts who were already on board the ISS took a photo as Peresild (or his character) exited the capsule and entered the station. Sherepild and Shipenko will shoot scenes for the next two weeks before returning to Earth on October 17.
Other projects have been filmed on the ISS, including , and a short called Tom Cruise hoped for it with the help of NASA and SpaceX, but the Russian team got ahead of him. Russian agency Roscosmos announced plans to send an actor to the ISS shortly after Cruise’s film was announced in May 2020.
Time will tell if The challenge is all good. Either way, the creatives behind the project have carved out their own little slice of history.
