President Donald Trump saw an opportunity to show what he saw as the strength of America. But for journalists working for the media run by the Russian state, it was the perfect time for a bit of trolling. More specifically, the Russian news channel Rossiya 24 and the program 60 minutes was making fun of the military equipment which was presented as ridiculously obsolete and the parade itself as "low energy" and "low" according to journalist Julia Davis. According to the official media, the machines were held together with "tape" and covered with "peeling paint," according to the Washington Post. A co-host of the show said that the tanks on display were "used during World War II and removed from service in 1957".
Artem Krasulin, a journalist at Rossiya 24, pointed out that some of the weapons seemed "abused" and that they did not even look complete. "Asked by reporters about why no new technology had been introduced in central Washington, the Pentagon responded …. the White House asked for these exact machines, "said Krasulin, according to Time. Journalists on 60 minutes as openly were mocking Fox News commentators and how they rushed on Trump and how he "changes all our lives".
The co-facilitator 60 minutes also made a comparison between the Trump parade and the way Russia was criticized for a similar show of force. "Americans are allowed to organize a parade because theirs is democratic, but we are not because our country is chauvinistic," she said. She also sent a tweet containing images of military equipment arriving in Washington for the parade. "Tanks on the streets of Washington, Trump is getting ready for the parade. Putin's America, " she wrote accompanied by a laughing emoji.
It's hardly the first time Russian-controlled media have made fun of Trump. Last year, Russia's 24 journalists celebrated after Trump was quoted as saying that Crimea should be considered part of Russia because the inhabitants speak Russian there. "Crimea is ours, Trump is ours!" Said the guests.
