Rust Foundation created to manage the Rust programming language

PROGRAMMING -

Mozilla has sponsored the Rust programming language for over a decade, while in 2020, as part of Mozilla’s big round of layoffs, most of the Rust team were dropped along with the Servo web engine team. Following this, plans were drawn up to create the Rust Foundation as an independent entity.

This non-profit organization for managing the Rust programming language ecosystem is now up and running with its first board meeting scheduled for this week. The original Rust Foundation board includes directors from the founding member companies of AWS, Huawei, Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla. There are also five directors of the project management.

These founding member societies will sponsor Rust’s work. Mozilla transferred the brand and all infrastructure assets (including the Crates.io repository) to the Rust Foundation.

More details on the formation of the Rust Foundation to advance Rust can be found at foundation.rust-lang.org.
