FitzMagic is heading for the nation’s capital.
Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has signed a one-year, $ 10 million contract with the Washington football team, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal would contain $ 2 million in incentives.
Fitzpatrick will join a deep Washington quarterback roster that includes former starters Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen. Schefter reports that Fitzpatrick is expected to show up to training camp as a DC starter.

The 38-year-old veteran just finished a season with the Miami Dolphins in which he recorded 2,091 passing yards with 13 touchdowns, 8 interceptions and a 68.3% completion rate in nine games (seven starts ). After opening the season as a starter in Miami, Fitzpatrick relinquished the lead to first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa.
Fitzpatrick has reportedly considered retiring during the offseason, but he now joins a Washington team in an unusual place as a quarterback.
Murky Washington QB Room Gets Some Light
Fitzpatrick has spent the second half of his career as a capable veteran that teams can turn to when transitioning between franchise quarterbacks. The same will likely happen in DC, which had one of the most chaotic quarterback halls in football.
Washington spent the 2020 regular season cycling with Allen, former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins and Player of the Year Alex Smith. Haskins opened as a starter before falling out of favor with the coaching staff for a variety of reasons. Then Allen took over for a few games before hitting the injured reserve, followed by Smith completing his return to the field. Haskins had one more chance before leaving DC for good as Smith recovered from an injury.
With Smith out for the playoff round, Washington turned to Heinicke, who impressed in a loss to eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That performance was enough to earn Heinicke a two-year extension last month.
Heinicke was the favorite to open next season as a starter, but now it looks like Fitzpatrick will take the reins from head coach Ron Rivera. Washington isn’t quite in a position to draft a franchise quarterback this year thanks to their trip to the playoffs (they currently sit at No. 19), so it looks like a year of driving with Fitzpatrick will be the plan for now.
